System Development Internship
About ENTSO-E
ENTSO-E is the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity. We coordinate the cross-border system operations, system development and electricity market activities of the 40 electricity transmission system operators (TSOs) which cover 36 countries. The ENTSO-E Secretariat in Brussels provides support on technical, market and policy developments for all European TSOs in their cooperation with each other, in their joint fulfilment of their legal mandates, and in the intensive interactions with EU decision-makers, regulatory agencies, associations representing network users and other stakeholders.
We are a dynamic European association working on important and exciting projects of the electricity sector with the commitment to support the efforts towards a carbon-neutral power system. At ENTSO-E, you will contribute to building the world’s largest integrated electricity market – impacting not only those in the energy sector but also Europe’s overall economy, today and in the future!
Job description
We are looking for a highly motivated and proactive student to join us as an intern for a 6 months period. You have electricity market background with some data analysis skills? You are seeking a role in the European energy transition, while gaining insights into the next decade of energy evolutions? Join our dynamic and passionate international team!
During the internship you will contribute to System Development Section. The interns will enhance and apply their knowledge to contribute to the implementation of the energy transition in Europe, especially through enhancement of data management systems, adequacy studies, and long-term studies
Possible internship topics
Economic Viability Assessment using revenue-maximisation:
The European Resource Adequacy Assessment (ERAA) is a pan-European monitoring assessment of power system resource adequacy up to 10 years ahead. Based on state-of-the-art methodologies and probabilistic assessments, it aims to model and analyse potential events that could adversely impact the balance between electric power supply and demand. The intern will support the Operation Modelling team of ENTSO-E in the economic viability assessment (EVA), one crucial piece of the ERAA product. The ERAA methodology gives the possibility to perform EVA by computing the direct difference between cost and revenues of generating units. The general principle is to iteratively run an Economic Dispatch (ED) model, extract the zonal price outputs, and to use them as a mean to compute revenues of the different capacities. Once the capacity exit and entry decisions have been taken, the ED model is modified accordingly and is re-run. Data analytics, visualisation are key point of focus of this internship.
Electricity Market Modelling and Curtailment Sharing:
Within the ERAA product, the intern will support the Modelling Operation team of ENTSO-E in Electricity market modelling and Curtailment Sharing. The task is to assist in the development of experimental models in Plexos to update the currently implemented methodology. Then, the intern will create visuals to demonstrate the performance of the model and iteratively refine the methodology after presenting the results to stakeholders, and comparing results against EUPHEMIA benchmarks. The intern will also have the opportunity to actively contribute to the ERAA 2026 delivery, which has a direct impact on capacity markets across Europe. The intern may also, depending on the workload and competencies, support the team in other aspects of ERAA project such as flow-based
Innovations implementing the revised ERAA methodology:
Within the development of the innovations implementing the revised ERAA methodology, the intern will support the activities aimed at designing and testing innovative technical approaches expanding the modelling of approved Capacity Mechanisms and their impact on the adequacy parameters of the different Member States. The tasks will include consolidating the datasets for the iterative runs, executing the updates in the modelling software reflecting the different assumptions and running the software to test the technical decisions taken by the experts. These activities will start from Q2 2026.
4.Electric Vehicles Flexibility Modelling in long term energy scenarios:
The intern will support the Modelling Operation team of ENTSO-E in enhancing the modelling of Electric Vehicles (EV) flexibility within the market model used for the scenarios building of the Ten-Year Network Development Plan. The tasks include consolidating the current EV modelling approach, researching academic and industry material to strengthen its robustness, and assessing EV modelling innovation proposals from stakeholders. Additionally, the intern will investigate the feasibility of extending the modelling scope to include other vehicle types, such as trucks, buses, and vans, in Plexos, as the current implementation focuses only on EV passenger cars. This internship offers the opportunity to contribute to improving the accuracy of flexibility assumptions in long-term planning energy scenarios models, which are essential for the integration of e-mobility into the European power system.
